After the New Year’s arrival, everyone thinks they can get a new chance to change their lives as most of them loss the last one. Some of us want to quit alcohol or smoking, and others need to lose or gain weight, etc. However, as the year goes on, the goals fade and they become unobtainable. According to research conducted at the University of Scranton, only 8% of people hit their New Year’s resolutions, and the rest fail to achieve their goals.
Do you know what the problem is? I think your goals might be unrealistic, and to achieve them, they need to be realistic. Never expect yourself to lose or gain 20 pounds in a month or to win the race without training. Be realistic instead of giving yourself false hopes.
Setting some real goals will help you achieve your resolutions. Honestly, we set the goals every year, but we never stick to them. How about shaking things up a bit; in 2022 by creating some realistic resolutions? Here, I will discuss five realistic New Year’s resolution goals, so stay with me till the end.
1. Prepare yourself mentally
Indeed, changing an ingrained habit is not a walk-in the park. It would help if you made up your mind before heading towards the New Year’s goal. Instead of stepping forward, take a step back to get ready for the change, not physically but mentally. Let us assume you are unsure of the perfect time to prepare yourself for new goals, then let me tell you.
Ending one year and starting the next one is the ideal time to think about your past year’s goals, the progress you made, and what goals you achieved, you’ll find out your shortcomings, what stopped you from achieving your goals, and what was missing in the journey.
However, if you achieve a little, don’t forget to celebrate it, because that’ll surely motivate you. Now start thinking about what changes need to be made this new year to help you achieve them. Please, make a list and prepare yourself mentally.
· Think positive.
· Do not focus on significant or quick changes.
· Make a change in your habits gradually.
· Focus on more minor changes to achieve the bigger one.
· Please don’t blame yourself for little errors; instead, move to the next step to do better.
Do not burden your mind and soul; rather, work on your progress slowly.
2. Set a right goal
Most people set New Year’s resolutions that are not for them. The goals they created for themselves are dictated mainly by someone or due to peer pressure. It’s not wrong to have someone to support you but never let others impose their decisions on you.
If you don’t have a passion for doing anything, you better drop it instead of wasting your time. Make sure to set the vital goals for you and only to benefit you. If your goal has these two things, you’ll automatically get the motivation to achieve it. Try to align your resolutions with the following:
· Your dreams
· Your priorities
· Your goals
· Your desires
Now start with your deepest desire and set your goals on top of your priority list: the goal or goals you always wanted to achieve and not the ones imposed by others. Whether your goal is to stay active, focus on your career, and studies, make sure to have a “must do and have to do” attitude throughout the journey.
3. Set tangible goals
Do you know what that means? Most people repeat this common mistake every year. Look, you cannot achieve 15 new skills, 10 different languages, and 7 new courses in a year, nor can you undo all your bad habits within 365 days. You don’t have supernatural powers. You need to set tangible goals you can achieve.
Having so many resolutions for the New Year will make you feel like a failure in the end. Try to make it precise and short. Make a list of things you can achieve and manage in one year. Now you must be thinking, you have a huge list of things to do next year and all of them are important. How to make it short? Let me help you with that too.
· Take a notepad and write down all your goals.
· Make sure to write the things that fall under the self-improvement category.
· Make a group of similar goals.
· Prioritize according to your needs.
· Start with the primary 3 to 5 goals for this year and leave others for next year.
Honestly, if you ask for my advice; I’d suggest you tackle one resolution every year instead of managing so many, poorly.
4. Change big goals into smaller ones.
Who doesn’t want to bring a profound yet positive change in their lives? Without a doubt, you have the best intentions to achieve something big this year, but you might accidentally set a goal that is impossible to achieve in a year. Remember to divide your big goals into smaller ones, therefore, making them all achievable.
It might take some extra time, but you’ll reach your goal or goals instead of sitting in a dark room with depression of being a failure. Let me tell you how to chunk up a massive goal into a smaller yet easier one.
· Create subtasks from the major task.
· Make a list and prioritize them.
· Place milestones on each task.
· Mention the time required for each task.
After achieving the first step, move toward the next one, instead of jumping to a bigger one.
5. Be On Track
In case you fall off track for any reason, make sure to get back as soon as possible instead of crying over the spilled milk. Setbacks can happen to everyone, but you’ll never lose the game if you handle the situation correctly. Keep in mind the following things:
· Skipping one task doesn’t make you a failure.
· If you miss a goal by 50%, you still have 50% left to achieve.
· It’s better to finish an objective, late than never at all.
· Change your weaknesses into strengths.
